Murfreesboro's Fall Calendar Has One Saturday Doing All the Work

October has several fall events around Murfreesboro, with five scheduled for Saturday, October 17, 2026.

That single Saturday is carrying an international festival at MTSU, a kids' festival at The Avenue, a science and aviation morning that stretches from the Discovery Center to the municipal airport, and the opening night of Cannonsburgh Village's flashlight tour, which runs into Sunday. The events bring together several organizers and audiences. Meanwhile, the four earlier dates covered below each have one event listed. The October 17 events span from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

For residents planning an outing, the main choice on October 17 is which event to attend and what to do on other dates during the month.

The Morning Runs on Science and Aircraft

The day starts at the Discovery Center at Murfree Spring, 502 SE Broad Street, where local scientists, engineers, and artists set up an outdoor festival of hands-on booths from noon to 4 p.m., rain or shine. Robotics, agriculture, meteorology, physics, live performances, food trucks. It's the kind of event that rewards showing up with kids who ask a lot of questions.

A few miles away, Murfreesboro Municipal Airport runs its own open house from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the aircraft list is the reason people build their whole morning around it. An AH-64E Apache from the 101st Airborne. A Tennessee Army National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk. A Vanderbilt LifeFlight helicopter. Homebuilt experimental planes sitting wingtip to wingtip with MTSU's DA-40 trainer, plus police and fire vehicles and flight simulators kids can actually sit in. The two events overlap for one hour. You can plan them as a pair: airport first, Discovery Center after, one loop instead of two separate trips.

Then the sun goes down and the day changes character entirely. Cannonsburgh Village turns its pioneer village into a flashlight hunt among the log cabins from 6 to 9 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, with fall crafts, games, music, hot drinks, and sweet treats. Admission is five dollars a person and free for kids five and under. It's built for elementary-age kids specifically, not a haunted house, and it's gentle enough that a family who spent the morning at the airport can reasonably do this too if they pace themselves.

Two More Events on October 17

Across town, MTSU's Student Union Building hosts the 2026 'Boro International Festival on the same Saturday.

The Avenue, behind Belk, runs its Rutherford Parent Fall Kids Fest the same day. In past years this event has leaned hard into trick-or-treating, live kids' entertainers, local vendor booths, and door prizes, built specifically for younger kids rather than the broader family audience the airport pulls. Between this and Cannonsburgh's flashlight hunt, families with young children have two kid-focused events scheduled on the same day, at opposite ends of the city.

Rutherford County's parks and recreation department runs Cannonsburgh. MTSU's international programs office runs the campus festival. The Avenue's event comes out of a separate parenting-focused organizer. These events are scheduled for October 17.

What the Rest of October Looks Like

Back the calendar up two weeks and the pace is completely different. Martin's Annual Fall Festival opens the month on Saturday, October 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Martin's Home & Garden, 1020 NW Broad Street. It's a straightforward one-stop event: local vendors, food trucks, live music, and the practical bonus of picking out the season's pumpkins and mums while you're there. No competition, no overlap, a full afternoon with nothing else pulling at it.

Three more city events fall on three separate days: a Pumpkin Fun Run on October 11, McFadden Fall Fest on October 14, and Wild Rumpus on October 15. Those dates offer three separate outings, each easy to plan around.

After the 17th, the pace slows again for over a week before Halloween week absorbs the last of the month's energy. The city's own calendar lists a Barfield Crescent Park Fall Festival on October 31, and the day before Halloween, starting at 3 p.m., downtown Murfreesboro turns the Public Square into a free trick-or-treat loop. Flat sidewalks, daylight, and no dark driveways make it genuinely built for small children rather than teenagers, but it fills in fast. By late afternoon the area around the courthouse is shoulder to shoulder, so arriving early isn't optional if the plan involves a stroller.

Outside the city limits, Lucky Ladd Farms in Eagleville, 4306 Rocky Glade Road, runs its own after-dark version of fall with a glow-in-the-dark corn maze, a dance party, friendly animals, and free glow accessories once the sun goes down. Tickets are required, and it's built as the softer alternative for kids who want the season's fun without anything genuinely scary attached to it.

Picking a Saturday on Purpose

None of this means October 17 should be avoided. It means it shouldn't be walked into assuming there's time for all five events, because there isn't. A family chasing aircraft and STEM booths in the morning has already spent the day's energy before Cannonsburgh's flashlight tour even opens at 6 p.m., and MTSU's international festival and The Avenue's kids fest are running in parallel to all of it on the opposite side of town. The honest move is to pick one anchor for the day, airport and Discovery Center together, or Cannonsburgh after dark, or one of the two events across town, and treat the rest as next year's plan.

For residents who prefer a quieter outing, Martin's and the three city events offer alternatives to the busier October 17 schedule.

Locations, times, and ticket requirements can shift close to the date, so it's worth checking each organizer's own listing before loading the car, particularly for the ticketed events at Lucky Ladd Farms and the $5 admission at Cannonsburgh.
